Cross-Border Donations (GE)

Do you have, or are you trying to find, donors who live in another European country?
Encourage them to support your organization's activities by taking advantage of tax benefits.

Take advantage of the opportunity to donate through the Giving Europe network (formerly Transnational Giving Europe).

Donors living in these 19 European countries can donate to your organization in Slovakia while taking full advantage of the tax benefits offered by the country where they reside.

Giving Europe, a partnership of European foundations and associations, facilitates cross-border giving by individuals and legal entities while taking advantage of tax benefits. Currently, Giving Europe’s members include organizations from the following countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. Most of them offer donors tax benefits that can be utilized through Giving Europe for cross-border giving. (Ireland, the Netherlands, and Portugal currently allow donations only within their own countries.)

Get an overview of tax benefits in the countries of the Giving Europe network.

Slovak tax law does not provide any tax benefits to donors. However, as a nonprofit organization in the Slovak Republic, you can take advantage of tax benefits for donors from other countries through Giving Europe.

Since 2007, more than 155.9 million euros have been donated through the network. In 2021, the total was more than 30.6 million euros—an increase of nearly 9% over the previous year. 10,977 donors used Giving Europe’s services in 2021. As many as 95% were individual donors and 5% were corporate donors. The largest number of regular donations comes from donors in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and the largest number of regular donations is received by organizations in Belgium, the United Kingdom, and France.

How It Works

  • An organization or applicant that receives a financial donation from abroad should contact the Giving Europe partner in its country—in Slovakia, the Carpathian Foundation—via ge@karpatskanadacia.sk.
  • The applicant must complete the online application to be included on the list of recipients and attach the required documents.
  • The local Giving Europe partner (in our case, the Carpathian Foundation) verifies the applicant’s eligibility to receive a donation through Giving Europe. If the applicant’s eligibility is confirmed at the local partner level, the next step is approval by partners in the countries where the applicant has potential donors or, as the case may be, where the applicant intends to seek out donors.
  • The donor sends their donation for the recipient to the Giving Europe partner in their country, and that partner sends it to the recipient either directly or through the relevant Giving Europe partner.
  • The donor will receive a donation receipt from the relevant Giving Europe partner, which serves as proof for claiming a tax benefit under domestic law.
  • 5% of the donation goes to Giving Europe’s partner organizations and the Giving Europe network, which facilitate the donation. Of this amount, 2% goes to Giving Europe in the donor’s country, 2% to Giving Europe in the recipient’s country, and 1% to the Giving Europe network to improve the quality of its services.
  • Giving Europe cannot raise funds for you. You must identify and reach out to donors yourself. However, Giving Europe will help ensure that your international donors can take advantage of the tax benefits available in their own countries, even though they are sending their donations to you.

What types of donors can the network work with?

  • Individuals, such as Slovaks living in another European country, who wish to donate to Slovak nonprofit organizations;
  • legal entities, such as companies, based in a country within the Giving Europe network that are interested in making a donation to an organization in another country within the Giving Europe network;
  • multinational companies with their registered offices in another country.

What types of recipients from Slovakia can use the network?

  • Non-governmental, non-profit organizations of various legal forms—for example: civic associations, foundations, non-profit organizations, non-investment funds, and the Slovak Red Cross;
  • nonprofit cultural organizations—such as theaters, movie theaters, and art galleries;
  • Nonprofit educational institutions—such as universities, schools, and libraries.

Both the donor and the recipient of the gift must be located in countries that are part of the Giving Europe network.
